When we dedicate ourselves to praying with and for others, it breeds a deep sense of unity. We develop a desire to be together and to serve each other well. It calibrates our focus as a people on the mission and way of Jesus. The way that this plays out practically is a significant element of our faith. In John 13:34-35, He says to His followers, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." Jesus tells them that they should model their love for each other after His example. And, He assures them that the way that they love one another will be representative of the One that they are following. This is a significant point of emphasis for us as we seek to respond to His leading. Our hope is that a watching world would see the way that we interact as a community and attribute it to being connected to Jesus. The scriptures give us great reminders of some ways this should look.Mark 9:50 says that we should be at peace with one another.Romans 12:10 says that we should be devoted to and honor one another.Galatians 5:13 says that we should serve one another.Galatians 6:2 says that we should carry each other's burdens.Ephesians 4:2 says that we should be patient with one another.Ephesians 4:32 says that we should be kind and compassionate, forgiving one another.Philippians 2:3 says that in humility, we should consider others better than ourselves.Colossians 3:9 says that we shouldn't lie to one another.1 Thessalonians 5:11 says that we should build one another up.1 Thessalonians 3:12 says that we should make our love increase for one another. The most vivid example comes only a few verses earlier in the book of John when Jesus actually gets up from the table and washes the disciples feet. When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. (John 13:12-15)Our desire is that we would serve one another in this way. We want to approach one another with humility, thinking the best of them. What's the "one another" verse that stands out to you as the area you most need to pay attention to?
